Microsoft WindowsNT 3.5(x)TCP/IP Configuration Guide

You must be logged into the system with Administration Privileges.

Open Program Manager.

Open the Main program group.
1.gif
Double click on the Control Panel Icon.

2.gif

From the Control Panel window double click on the Network Icon.

The Network Settings window displays. This is where we will begin to configure the TCP/IP Stack.

4.gif

The first thing that we must do is find the TCP/IP Protocol entry in the Installed Network Software dialog box. (If this entry does not exist, you may have to add it by selecting the Add Software option.)

5.gif

Highlight the TCP/IP Protocol Entry and click on the Configure button.
The TCP/IP Configuration window displays.

6.gif

We must enter the IP address, the Subnet Mask, and the Default Gateway.

In the IP Address box enter your assigned CIDR network number (a.b.c.x) where x is an UNUSED host IP address. (Keep in mind that the router has already been assigned the .1 host IP address).
For example: 38.254.100.2

The subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 for an unsubnetted Class C network.

Enter the IP address of your router in the Default Gateway box (a.b.c.1).

For example: 38.254.100.1

If you are not using the Windows NT WINS service, leave the WINS information blank.

Next we must configure the DNS name resolution. Click on the DNS button to display the DNS
Configuration window.

7.gif

Enter the host name of the machine in the Host Name box. (This is an arbitrary name chosen by you to refer to this machine).

First choose the two closest resolvers from the DNS Name Resolvers.

Next add the IP addresses of the DNS resolvers. Enter the first IP address in the left side box then click on the Add button.

This adds the Resolver to the Domain Name Service (DNS) Search Order box.

8.gif

We must repeat this process for the other Name Resolver. When complete, the information should look similar to the example shown below.

9.gif

After you select OK you return to the TCP/IP Configuration Screen.

Select OK again. You will be prompted to to reboot the machine.

TCP/IP should be enabled after the reboot.

Select TCP/IP and select the card you want to bind it to.

5.gif

From the Binding TCP/IP to a LAN Interface screen, set the IP address and netmask. (The netmask can be listed as 255.255.255.0)

All other defaults are fine.

Press ESC and answer yes to updating the tables.
This completes all necessary configuration information.
Press ESC until you are back to the Internetworking Configuration menu.
Press ESC and the server will give you the warning that:

Changes made in INETCFG are not active immediately. To put these changes into effect, bring down the server and restart it, or use the "reinitialize system" command (please refer to the documentation for the proper use of this command).

The server will need to be restarted for these changes to take effect.

To Set Up DNS Resolving

You need to set up an /etc/resolv.cfg file. There is a sample file already in the /etc/samples directory.
The file should look like:

Trumpet Winsock TCP/IP Configuration Guide

Download the Trumpet Winsock distribution files and unzip them.

Make sure you have a current copy of WINPKT.COM (available at ftp://ftp.trumpet.com/).

Installation

Create the directory C:\TRUMPWSK. Unzip TWSK21F.ZIP and WINAP21F.ZIP into this directory.
Install the software drivers.

Ethernet Network

* Install the packet driver for your Ethernet card.

The entry in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file should be similar to:C:\ETHERNET\8003PKDR.EXE /B:240 /R:D000 /I:10 /E:60

* Install the WINPKT.COM virtual packet driver.

The entry in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file should be similar to:
C:\TRUMPWSK\WINPKT.COM 0x60

In Program Manager, create a program group named Network. Use File Manager to drag and drop the EXE files in C:\TRUMPWSK into the Network program group.

Edit the PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT to include C:\TRUMPWSK. This enables Winsock applications to find WINSOCK.DLL when they are launched.

Reboot the computer and start Windows.

Launch TCPMAN from the Network program group. (You can select Help from the menu bar to learn more about the software.) This will bring up a message similar to the following:

1.gif

Select Setup on the menu bar.
Trumpet Winsock Setup window displays.

2.gif

Make sure that the Internal SLIP is NOT checked.

Make sure that the Internal PPP is NOT checked.

Enter the IP address of this workstation.
Enter the Default gateway (this is the IP address of your router).

Enter the IP address of the closest Name server (from the list of DNS Name Resolvers.

The Time server should be blank.

Make sure that the Domain suffix is a period.

* Packet vector=00
* MTU=1500
* TCP RWIN=4096
* TCP MSS=1024
* Demand load timeout (secs)=5
* TCP RTO MAX=60

When ready, click on OK.

The file TRUMPWSK.INI will be created in the C:\TRUMPWSK directory.

You will be prompted to restart Trumpet Winsock. Double click on the TCPMAN icon to restart.

Launch any Winsock compliant application.

TCPMAN.EXE will start automatically if it is not already running.

Several clients are included with the Trumpet Winsock, including TRMPTEL.EXE version 0.08 for telnet, WINARCH.EXE for searching Archie databases, and TRUMPING.EXE to ping another machine on the network.

TRUMPET PING provides the simplest means of verifying that you have a network connection. Launch TRUMPING and enter the name of an Internet host at the prompt. For example, you might try to PING mit.edu. If your connection is working, and if the host is operating, you will receive a response from the remote host.

Note: The WINSOCK.DLL file for the Trumpet Winsock remains in the C:\TRUMPWSK directory. Some vendors may require that their WINSOCK.DLL be copied to the C:\WINDOWS directory. If you have used Winsock software from another vendor, but now want to try the Trumpet Winsock, be sure to remove the other vendor's WINSOCK.DLL so that it will not interfere with the Trumpet Winsock implementation.
