Download the Trumpet Winsock distribution files and unzip them.
Make sure you have a current copy of WINPKT.COM (available at ftp://ftp.trumpet.com/).
Installation
Create the directory C:\TRUMPWSK. Unzip TWSK21F.ZIP and WINAP21F.ZIP into this directory.
Install the software drivers.
Ethernet Network
* Install the packet driver for your Ethernet card.
The entry in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file should be similar to:C:\ETHERNET\8003PKDR.EXE /B:240 /R:D000 /I:10 /E:60
* Install the WINPKT.COM virtual packet driver.
The entry in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file should be similar to:
C:\TRUMPWSK\WINPKT.COM 0x60
In Program Manager, create a program group named Network. Use File Manager to drag and drop the EXE files in C:\TRUMPWSK into the Network program group.
Edit the PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT to include C:\TRUMPWSK. This enables Winsock applications to find WINSOCK.DLL when they are launched.
Reboot the computer and start Windows.
Launch TCPMAN from the Network program group. (You can select Help from the menu bar to learn more about the software.) This will bring up a message similar to the following:
Select Setup on the menu bar.
Trumpet Winsock Setup window displays.
Make sure that the Internal SLIP is NOT checked.
Make sure that the Internal PPP is NOT checked.
Enter the IP address of this workstation.
Enter the Default gateway (this is the IP address of your router).
Enter the IP address of the closest Name server (from the list of DNS Name Resolvers.
The Time server should be blank.
Make sure that the Domain suffix is a period.
* Packet vector=00
* MTU=1500
* TCP RWIN=4096
* TCP MSS=1024
* Demand load timeout (secs)=5
* TCP RTO MAX=60
When ready, click on OK.
The file TRUMPWSK.INI will be created in the C:\TRUMPWSK directory.
You will be prompted to restart Trumpet Winsock. Double click on the TCPMAN icon to restart.
Launch any Winsock compliant application.
TCPMAN.EXE will start automatically if it is not already running.
Several clients are included with the Trumpet Winsock, including TRMPTEL.EXE version 0.08 for telnet, WINARCH.EXE for searching Archie databases, and TRUMPING.EXE to ping another machine on the network.
TRUMPET PING provides the simplest means of verifying that you have a network connection. Launch TRUMPING and enter the name of an Internet host at the prompt. For example, you might try to PING mit.edu. If your connection is working, and if the host is operating, you will receive a response from the remote host.
Note: The WINSOCK.DLL file for the Trumpet Winsock remains in the C:\TRUMPWSK directory. Some vendors may require that their WINSOCK.DLL be copied to the C:\WINDOWS directory. If you have used Winsock software from another vendor, but now want to try the Trumpet Winsock, be sure to remove the other vendor's WINSOCK.DLL so that it will not interfere with the Trumpet Winsock implementation.
